MERS and SARS: Similar Not Identical

The novel coronavirus MERS-CoV has similar clinical characteristics to SARS, but also some important differences, researchers reported, including a much higher death rate.

But at the moment it seems “unlikely” that the new virus will follow the same path of global illness as SARS, according to Ziad Memish, FRCP, Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister for Public Health, and colleagues.

MERS emerged in September 2012 in Saudi Arabia and so far almost all the 90 reported cases and 45 deaths have originated there or had links with the country, Memish and colleagues reported online in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
